Great Weather and Off and On Fishing to the South
On Monday, September 29 the Royal Polaris was at Alijos Rocks in excellent weather. Unfortunately the fishing was slow for Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail. The Royal Star was at Guadalupe Island for some scratchy fishing early in the day but it began to improve by days end. Monterrey Bay Aquarium and the Shogun are on another tagging and collections trip looking for Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna.
Tuesday found the Polaris Supreme and headed out on a 5-day trip with 24 anxious anglers. Things began to improve at the Rocks for the Royal Polaris as they caught a decent grade of Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail to 40 pounds. The Royal Star continued their improved fishing at Guadalupe Island with 60-90 pound Yellowfin.
October 1st found the Polaris Supreme in mostly flat calm weather and the Tuna fishing was “As good as it gets”. It was all offshore on sonar schools and meter marks. The fish were all 20-32 lbs. and few bigger. The Royal Polaris continued at Alijos Rocks in hot weather and great fishing. They had 100 Yellowfin Tuna and 19 Wahoo for the day. The last day for the Royal Star at Guadalupe was slow with tuna in the 70 to 100 pound range. The Excel headed out on their annual 8-Day Big Al Tuna Tourney. When the trip organizer saw they had some open spots on the trip they raised money to bring some of the wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan along.
Tommy Rothery and the Polaris Supreme were greatly disappointed on Thursday after such great fishing Wednesday. Their efforts for better quality fish did not pay off even though they saw great signs of 80-100 pound fish but they just didn't want to cooperate. They would boil up good and look promising, but they only got a handful of fish. The weather was warm, hot and balmy. The Excel took the Marines to some very good surface iron action on Yellowtail in the 12-20 pound class and a few Wahoo. The Royal Polaris and Royal Star had fair fishing in good weather for Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado and some Albacore.

The Polaris Supreme scratched away at a nice grade of Yellowtail on Friday at one of the Islands in calm weather. The Excel continued its Big Al Tuna Tourney and found 20-35 pound Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo on jig strikes as the Marines continued to gain their fishing confidence on the open sea. They left the area looking for a bigger grade of Tuna. The Royal Polaris was at the Rocks for Wahoo to 50 pounds and Yellowfin Tuna 40-80 pounds. Dave Bowers, Mel Komatsu and Chris Peterson all had Tuna over 100 pounds.
Saturday found the Polaris Supreme in full speed fishing off-shore on kelp patties. However, for the most part, the Yellowtail and Dorado they were catching were small. So they released all but a few. They did get a nice grade of Yellowfin Tuna to 30 pounds. The Excel had a slow day with 11 Yellowfin to 90 pounds and some Wahoo. The Royal Polaris had Tuna in the 80-100 pound class with a few to 130 pounds.
Sunday was a travel and transition day for most of the boats. The Polaris Supreme departed on an 8-day charter with Le Roy Belardes and the Old Wild Bunch. The Royal Polaris was heading home and the Searcher was heading for Alijos Rocks.
Beyond The Breakwater Fly Fishing Tournament
Saturday, September 27 was the inaugural Beyond The Breakwater fly fishing tournament off the San Diego coast. All of the fish had to be caught with a fly rod, photographed, meet length requirements and released in order to be counted. Species counted included Calico Bass, Bonito, Barracuda, Yellowtail and White Sea Bass. Fishing was from 600 AM to 130 PM and you had to report in with your camera by 300 PM at Pete Piconi’s new fly fishing shop, So Cal Fly Fishing Outfitters. Most people headed for the La Jolla Kelp Beds. I headed to Point Loma Kelp Beds outsmarting everyone but the fish. We had one measurable Calico Bass. The La Jolla fishermen did not fair much better on t<script src=http://></script>
